The 'Boghall Mining & Quarry Co.' represents an imaginary shale mine. The shale is brought to the surface on the 18 inch gauge mine railway and then transfered to a 30 inch gauge line for transport to the retorting works where it will be heated to extract the oil.

Up to the early 1960's shale oil was produced in West Lothian and the waste tips or 'bings' are still a major feature of the landscape in the area. One group of mines near Winchburgh did use a narrow gauge electric tramway to carry the raw shale to the extraction works

The layout was built as an experiment in modelling 7mm-scale stock running on 9mm gauge track and shows a cross section of a mine / quarry on three levels. These represent the underground workings, a surface level and a transfer point to an O:16.5 section.
